Over the past 3 years, I think we’ve said that we’re going to move to 6 different places… Molly and I both have our checklists for things that we want in the place we want to live and we couldn’t seem to find somewhere that they’ve all lined up. I wanted to be close to the mountains so that it wasn’t the worst thing in the world to drive to ski on the weekends. And Molly wanted to be somewhere that wasn’t in the snow and also wasn’t sweltering hot in the summers. We had Colorado, Utah, and Washington all on our pros and cons list, but moving out of state would mean moving away from family and the friends we’ve made here, and that was a big con.
As the summer continued, the time started ticking away for when Molly needed to be back in the office for work. This ultimately meant she needed to decide which office she was going to be in. More and more of her coworkers and friends were heading back to the Bay Area, some she hadn’t seen in the 530 days ‘Out of Office’ due to the pandemic. Through all that time, I appreciate her taking the chance and moving to Folsom to be closer to me while I continued to work at the Public Defenders office. However, we knew that Folsom wasn’t going to be our home for too much longer.
Reluctant at first, I wasn’t sure how excited I was about moving to the Bay Area. After our few weeks of being in our little cottage, it hardly feels like the Bay Area at all. When we’re home, we can walk to one of our favorite coffee shops, our favorite breweries, and even the cutest little parks that we picnic at for Sunday dinners. We can run some amazing trails and ride some of the best road routes, all from the front door. And even some of the best Santa Cruz mountain biking is only a 30 minute drive down 17. The skiing is a bit further than I’d like to admit, but that at least brings surfing back into the equation when there’s no snow (even though I’m praying for it and will heading up to Tahoe as much as possible this winter).
If you’re ever passing through, come stop by for a beer, coffee, cocktail or just a ride!
