After touring both Saturday and Sunday, over the weekend, we decided to use a resort day and ski snowbird to really get our legs under us. Zach showed us all around the mountain from the Bookends, all the way to the Baldy Bowl Ridge that we dropped down through the tiger tails. We didn’t take many photos, but Monday was a fun day to reset.
Tuesday morning, we woke up to the first snow of the trip. Hopefully it won’t be the last, but we took full advantage of trying to find some fun lines that could safely provide some fresh turns.
Zach called up his buddy Ryan and we spent a little over an hour trying to determine our objective for the following day. After going back and forth between a big objective, or just a fun party day, we settled on trying to get a few laps in the Monitors in Big Cottonwood canyon.
The clouds and the snow stayed a little later than planned so we once again got a bit of a later start to accommodate the weather. We skimmed up to the top Ridge of the monitors through USA Bowl, stopping for pictures along the way, and a beer/snacks at the top. The clouds provided some awesome views looking back into the canyon so it was hard to not shoot as we made our way above the aspens.
We were ultimately surprised with how no one had really skied the bowl yet that day. According to Ryan, these hills tend to be a bit difficult to actually get to ski with the commonly unstable snowpack in these bowls. There had been a slide a few weeks prior in the West Monitor bowl so we still decided to make a ski cut and be cautious as we descended into the bowl.
One by one we farmed the bowl, lining our tracks up side by side and hollering the whole way down.
A quick transition and we were skinning our way back up for another beer and another lap. Once again we lined up our tracks and had a blast cruising down the hill. We debated taking a third lap, but the light was starting to fade and we needed to get back to the car. So we made our way back to the top and had a party lap down USA bowl, with tight turns through the aspens and low tide on the rocks.
We finished at the car with a beer in hand as the temperature started to drop and cheers to another solid day in the Wasatch.
One last day in Salt Lake and we’d be on our way to Jackson.
